Jim Storms, AB8YK
Jim is a retired IT professional and is a member of Dayton Amateur Radio Association, 2025-2026 Dara President, 2024-2025 Dara Vice-President, 2023-2024 Hamvention General Chair, the Huber Heights Amateur Radio Club VE team and 2014-2015 President of Southwest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA). Jim is a frequent member of the TI5N CQWW contest team and supports the YXDA website. He enjoys contesting, participating in field Day, Ohio QSO Party, CQWW WPX along with other QSO contests, assisting in public service events and DX’ing. Jim has been co-leader on most of the Youth DX Adventures.
Jim also participates in Boy Scout activities including the Radio Merit Badge. He was also a member of the 2010 BSA National Jamboree K2BSA team.
Ron Doyle, N8VAR
Ron is a retired Database Guru and a currently 2024-2025 President of Dayton Amateur Radio Association and the Huber Heights Amateur Radio Club VE team. He has been a ham for 30 years. Ron has served 50 years in Scouting and has attended 6 National Jamborees on the K2BSA staff. Ron checks into multiple ARES voice/digital nets and Winlink nets weekly to keep up on his Emergency and Digital communications skills.
Youth DX Adventure N3Y Team Requirements and Application

- Hold a valid amateur extra license.
- Between the ages of 13 and 18 on date of travel. Special considerations may be made by board.
- Must be within driving distance of West Middlesex, PA arriving August 7 and departing August 9. YDXA reimburses for mileage from your home to K3LR at a specific amount per mile based on Google Maps distance for round trip (Max $600). YDXA pays room and most meals during days of the event. All other expenses are the participant’s responsibility. Rooms are per family (adult plus Youth participants). This is NOT a family vacation and focus on the event is required.
- Must not have been any part of any K3LR previous operation.
- Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who accepts all legal responsibilities for you and your actions. It is preferred the parent or guardian is a licensed Ham but not required.
- Some HF experience required excluding Field Day.
- Must have used a computer contact logging software program. The specific software used on the trip will be designated prior to departure by team leaders and their decision is final. ADIF format files are given to the team participants upon conclusion of the trip.
- A willingness to work as a team and accept direction of team leaders. May be paired with another youth or adult during on-air time as determined by team leaders.
- A willingness to learn from team members and leaders.
- Cooperate with others.
- Know the phonetic alphabet and able to speak clearly with quick translation of letters to phonetics.
- Have some DX location call sign recognition.
- Be willing to participate in fund raising activities in their geographical area to support the trip. If possible attendance and support of the YDXA booth at the Dayton Hamvention®.
- You understand that as part of a team and to help support future trips any funds for all articles concerning trips and experiences submitted for publication are to be paid to the YDXA.
- If accepted as a team member then signed permission is required between team members and team leaders/YDXA. Additional signed permission are required by K3LR Contest Station and DX Engineering as to use of pictures, etc.
- Application processing steps.
- Complete and submit application to the team leaders.
- Team leaders review application and determine if qualifications match the requirements.
- A phone or preferably Zoom interview between the team leaders, youth applicant and adult applicant is conducted.
- If selected, the applicant is sent permission forms to be completed and returned.
